Welcome to Tōtara – The Final Step at Adventure School
Tōtara Syndicate is where our Year 7 & 8 students transition from being senior learners to becoming the leaders of our school. We provide a unique environment that combines the familiar, supportive community of Adventure School with the increased independence needed for the move to college. Tōtara students are the “seniors” of our entire school community. They are well-known by staff and peers alike, allowing us to tailor our coaching to their specific social and emotional needs during these formative years.
Our Focus
In Tōtara, there is a strong focus on independence and self-management. Students engage in creative, real-world learning experiences, with literacy coming to life through performances, poetry, and presentations. Maths is explored in meaningful, real-life contexts, while hands-on science and technology are a key focus. Additionally, inquiries often lead to actions that extend beyond the classroom, encouraging students to make an impact in their community and beyond.
Leadership & Tuakana Teina
In Tōtara, leadership is a practical, everyday experience. We actively encourage our students to step into roles that build character and a sense of responsibility toward others.
- Contributing: Students can take on formal roles as House Captains or Head Students, learning the value of service and accountability.
- Mentoring: Our Tuakana Teina and Kōrero Āwhi programs empower our seniors to lead with heart. By mentoring younger peers, Year 7 and 8 students realise their influence as role models, building the “soft skills” of empathy and communication. This doesn’t just support the younger tamariki; it helps our seniors develop the maturity and confidence they’ll carry with them long after they leave us.
Supporting the Whole Student
Intermediate years bring change — socially, emotionally, and personally. We guide students through this time with care, coaching, and support, helping them to navigate challenges and explore their identities.

Our goal is for every student to leave Tōtara feeling capable and confident. By balancing high expectations with a supportive environment, we ensure they have the resilience and skills to succeed—not just at college, but in the wider world beyond Adventure School.
